This 18-day Beijing Tibet Chongqing trip takes you to visit the historic relics and appreciate the most stunning scenery of all these three places. It begins with your Beijing sightseeing, including Mutianyu Great Wall and Forbidden City, Imperial Ancestral Temple and Beihai Park, and Nanluoguxiang.

Then, you will take a flight to Lhasa, the capital of TAR. After visiting the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, Drepung and Sera Monastery in Lhasa, you will head for Everest Base Camp via Gyantse and Shigatse. Along the way, you can appreciate the sacred Yamdrok Lake and Karola Glacier, explore Kumbum Stupa and Tashilunpo Monastery. The overnight stay at EBC enables you to appreciate the splendid sunset and sunrise over the highest peak on our planet. After that, you will go back to Lhasa, and visit Namtso Lake which is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. After arriving in Chongqing by flight, you will visit the Ciqikou Town and Hongya Cave, and appreciate the amazing Dazu Rock Carving and Wulong Karst Geology Park.

Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive in Beijing

Welcome to Beijing! Upon your arrival in Beijing, your driver will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Beijing in a private car. Then you could have a rest in your hotel or walk around on your own.

Day 2: Beijing sightseeing: Mutianyu Great Wall

No tour of China would be complete without a visit to the Great Wall, the largest man-made structure on the planet. After breakfast, you will visit Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. Stretching 2,250 meters long and including 22 watchtowers, Mutianyu Great Wall is the longest, fully restored Great Wall section open to tourists.

Day 3: Beijing sightseeing: Forbidden City, Imperial Ancestral Temple, and Beihai Park

Your guided tour starts with a visit to the famous Forbidden City, which used to be the imperial palace from around 1420 to 1912 and now houses the Palace Museum. Then, you will move to the Imperial Ancestral Temple, or Taimiao of Beijing where sacrificial ceremonies were held on the most important festival occasions in honor of the imperial family's ancestors during both the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After that, you will visit Beihai Park, one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved ancient imperial gardens in China. The structures and scenes in the Beihai Park are described as masterpieces of gardening technique that reflects the style and the superb architectural skill and richness of traditional Chinese garden art.

Day 4: Beijing sightseeing: Nanluoguxiang

In the morning, you can explore Nanluoguxiang yourself. Built in the Yuan Dynasty and neighboring many typical narrow streets known as hutong, Nanluoguxiang has become a popular tourist destination with coffee shops, souvenir shops, and some old siheyuan associated with famous historic and literary figures. In the afternoon, you can do some shopping if you like and prepare for the flight to Lhasa in the next morning.

Day 5: Fly from Beijing to Lhasa (3650m)

When you arrive in Lhasa, your tour guide will hold a board with your name on it at the exit to welcome you. A private car will take you to the reserved hotel. You may view the Yarlung Tsangpo River/Bhamaputra River (the longest and largest river in Tibet) and Lhasa River on the way from airport to Lhasa. Then, you can take a good rest at hotel to acclimatize to Tibetan plateau environment.

Day 6: Lhasa sightseeing: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street

Today, you’ll pay a visit to the famous Potala Palace, the world culture heritage and the winter palace of Dalai Lama. You can explore its audience halls, the jeweled and golden burial chortens (stupa tombs) of past Dalai Lamas, meditation cave of the 33rd Great King of Tibet, and tremendous number of Buddhist frescoes, thangkas, combinations of mandala, etc.

Then you will head to the holiest temple in Tibet, the Jokhang Temple, built during Songtsen Ganpo's reign by Princess Wencheng of Tang dynasty, 647 A.D. Here you can observe sincere pilgrims making prostration in front of Jokhang Temple. While entering inside the temple, you can see the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve. On the top of Jokhang Temple, you can enjoy the panorama of old Lhasa City and great vista of Potala Palace.

Then you can do the kora with pilgrims and locals by circling the Barkhor Street around the temple, buy some souvenirs, and taste sweet tea and local snacks in local tea house. Later, you can explore farm products like yak butter in Tromzikhang, the famous farm produce market.

Day 7: Lhasa sightseeing: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery

Today, you will visit two important monasteries in Lhasa, the Drepung and the Sera. Drepung Monastery, the largest monastery in Tibet, was founded by Jamyang Choeje in 1416 and used to be home to more than 10,000 monks. Hiking along the mountain steps, you can see Buddhist painting on the rock face. During Shoton Festival, locals and pilgrims swarm to Drepung Monastery to celebrate the gigantic Thangka Buddha unveiling ceremony on the Gambo Utse Mountain.

After having lunch, you will visit Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419 by Tsongkapa's disciple Jamchen Choeje. The most interesting thing is to see monks debating in the courtyard at around 3-5 in the afternoon. By yelling at each other, slapping hands and rolling mala, two monks make a pair to debate on philosophical issues. You can also appreciate the delicately-made Mandala, sanding paintings, and massive Buddhist scriptures inside Sera Monastery.

Day 8: Lhasa (3650m) to Shigatse (3900m) via Gyantse (360km)

Today, you will set off from Lhasa to Shigatse via Gyantse. On the way, when passing over the Gampala Pass (4,790m), you can have a far view of Yamdrok Lake and the snow-capped mountains around it. You can also get spectacular views of Mt. Nyenchen Khangsar (7191m), the highest mountain around Lhasa. After visiting the turquoise Yamdrok Lake, you can admire the Korola Glacier on the roadside and hang prayer flags at Simila Mountain Pass around Manak Dam Lake before arriving at Gyantse.

Gyantse was historically known as the Tibet's third largest city after Lhasa and Shigatse. In Gyantse, you will visit the famous Pelkor Monastery and the Nepali-style Kumbum Stupa. After one and a half hour's car ride, you will arrive in Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet. You may also visit traditional Barley Mill and view the landscape of Barley Field (in summer).

Day 9: Shigatse (3900m) to Everest Base Camp (5200m) (330km)

In the morning, you will visit the home of Panchen Lama - Tashilunpo Monastery. It is the largest monastery of the Gelug Sect in Rear Tibet and the main stage where generations of Panchen Lamas carried out religious and political activities. After getting your Alien’s Travel Permit, you will head for Lhatse and have lunch there.

Afterwards, you will pass Tsola Pass (4,600m) and Gyatsola Pass (5,248m). Shortly after entering Mt. Everest National Nature Reserve, you can appreciate the panoramic view of Himalaya at Gawula Pass (5,180m). Keep marching along the new zigzag road to Everest Base Camp, you can get closer view of Mt. Everest peak. You can also enjoy the sunset of golden Everest peak at the lodging area if time and weather permits .

Stay overnight at tent or Rongbuk Monastery guesthouse.

Day 10: Everest Base Camp (5200m) to Shigatse (3900m)

In the morning, you can admire the stunning sunrise of Everest peak if weather permits. After having a full view of the magnificent Mt. Everest, you will visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world as well as the unique Nyingma Sect monastery where nuns and monks live together. And then, take the car ride back to Shigatse.

Day 11: Shigatse to Lhasa (280km)

Today, you will set off from Shigatse to Lhasa along the Friendship Highway, the whole ride is 280km and takes about 6 hours. You can admire the Yarlung Tsangpo River/Bhamaputra River (the longest and largest river in Tibet) along the way to Lhasa.

Day 12: Lhasa to Namtso Lake

Take the car ride in the morning to Lake Namtso (4718m), one of the three holy lakes in Tibet as well as the world’s highest saline lake. On the way, you can see Nyenchen Tangula Mountain Range, enchanting villages around Lhasa Valley, and lots of nomads with yaks and sheep grazing in the flourishing grassland (in summer). In addition, you can appreciate the view of Qinghai-Tibet Railway with snow mountain background. Driving over Lagenla Pass (5190m), you can far view Namtso Lake shinning under the sun.

Then you can take a leisurely trek around Tashi Island and enjoy the stunning Namtso Lake against the snow-capped Mt. Nyenchen Thanglha. Finally, you will head to Damxung or Yampachen and spend the night there. The lower altitude at Damxung and Yampachen shall bring you a sound sleep.

Day 13: Journey back to Lhasa

The trip back to Lhasa is relaxing both to body and soul. You will make a stopover at Yampachen, where the famous mineral-rich Yampachen Hot Spring will remove your tiredness and get your refreshed. Having enjoyed the joyful time at the outdoor hot spring, you again hit the road to Lhasa. The final leg of the road trip takes you to visit Chimelong Nunnery (Phyirmil Lung Nunnery) and you may have a far view of a sky burial site nearby.

Cultural Tips: Tibetan Buddhists believe that the corpse is nothing but a discarded shell, and offering their bodies to vultures is an offering of generosity back to the earth that gave them life. The master of the sky burial ceremony will perform rituals over the body, summon vultures by burning incense and tsampa, and dispose of the body into pieces. Sky burial is a private and sacred matter, it is not recommended to go to sky burial sites or take pictures.

Day 14: Fly from Lhasa to Chongqing

You guide will pick you up from hotel and transfer you to the airport for your onward flight to Chongqing. It takes about 2.5 hours to arrive in Chongqing by flight. Upon your arrival, your local guide will pick you up and transfer you to hotel. You can have a rest at hotel or walk around.

You can visit Jiefangbei Square, the “Times Square” in Chongqing, taste the spicy Chongqing hot pot in Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, and enjoy the night view of Yangzi and Jialing River from E’ling Park.

Day 15: Chongqing sightseeing: Three Gorges Museum, Ciqikou Town, and Hongya Cave

Today, you will visit Three Gorge Museum to learn the historical facts of Chongqing before building Three Gorge Dam and appreciate the statues, ceramics, and bronze relics. Then, you will go to Ciqikou Town, you can walk on traditional cobbled streets, buy intriguing souvenir, taste local food there.

You will stop by Hongya Cave at night. You can try the famous hot pot and local snacks while enjoy the amazing night view of Jialing River Bridge.

Day 16: Chongqing sightseeing: Dazu Rock Carving

Dazu Rock Carving is about 100km way from the downtown. Possessing massive and gigantic Buddhist sculptures dating back to 7 AD, it’s listed as one of the eight most brilliant grottoes in the world and bears the influence of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. After appreciating the carving, you will take the car ride to Wulong County.

Day 17: Chongqing sightseeing: Wulong Karst Geology Park

Wulong Karst Geology Park is featured in south China karst landscape. There you will visit Three Natural Bridges, the largest natural bridge groups in Asia. It is composed of Tianlong Bridge, Qinglong Bridge and Heilong Bridge, which are all natural bridges lying from north to south, crossing over the Yangshuihe Gorge and connecting the mountains at the two sides. Afterwards, you will take 3 hours’ car ride to go back to the downtown of Chongqing.

Day 18: Depart from Chongqing

The guide will pick you up at the hotel, transfer you to the airport or train station and help you get on board.
