Overall, there are eight cities offering Tibet trains to Lhasa from mainland China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xining, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Xi’an and Lanzhou. These trains depart at different times daily or every other day. From different locations of the country, one can choose the proper train to get to the plateau according to your own situation. Z21: Beijing-Lhasa Train Schedule

Beijing is the one of the most popular and important cities for travelers to take train to Tibet from mainland China. Train No. Z21 is the only train heading to Lhasa, departing every day at 19:53 pm from Beijing West Railway Station. You will spend around 39:43 hours riding the train. Z164: Shanghai-Lhasa Train Schedule

From Shanghai, the train to Tibet (No. Z164) departs every day 18:33 and takes around 44:32 hours to reach Lhasa. It is the only train that connects the international metropolis with the holy city on the highland. Travelers will spend two nights onboard the train and experience an epic ride to the snowy plateau. The return train from Lhasa to Shanghai departs at 11:50 pm following the same route on the way back.

Z8991: Xining-Lhasa Train Schedule

Xining is the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and all trains to Tibet from mainland China will stop here for a while, before moving on to Lhasa. Whereas, there is only one train that originates from the Xining Railway Station, which is Train No. Z8991. The train departs every other day at 21:50 p.m., and will reach Lhasa on the next day. On the way back, Train No. Z8982 will leaves at 09:25 a.m. for Xining.

Z322: Chengdu-Lhasa Train Schedule

Chengdu is geographically close to the land of Tibet and is to the east of it, but the train from here takes a roundabout way via Xining in the north. The train No. Z322 is the only train running from Chengdu North Railway Station to Lhasa Railway Station, leaves every other day at 21:11 p.m. The duration of the Chengdu-Lhasa train journey is about 34:30 hours, shorter than many other routes like Beijing, Shanghai. On the way return, the train from Lhasa to Chengdu leaves at 18:00 p.m.

Z264 Guangzhou-Lhasa Train Schedule

Despite of the long riding distance, Guangzhou is an important gateway city to enter Tibet by train. The Train No. Z264 from Guangzhou departs every day at 09:15 a.m. and arrives in Lhasa at 14:17 on the third day. It is the longest journey (53:02 hours) one could experience for taking train to Tibet. The train will cross several southeast provinces after joining in the Qinghai-Tibet train route at Xining Railway Station. From Lhasa, the return train departs at 12:40 for Guangzhou.

Z223: Chongqing-Lhasa Train Schedule

Chongqing offers the scheduled train to Lhasa every other day, running for 33 hours and 45 minutes from 21:56 p.m. to 07:41 a.m. of the third day. The Chongqing to Lhasa train (Z223) and Chengdu to Lhasa train runs alternately, so when you miss the train for one city, you can take the train from the other. Transfer between Chengdu and Lhasa is very convenient with frequent high-speed trains. On the way back, train from Lhasa to Chongqing departs 19:00 p.m.

Z265 & Z165 Xi’an-Lhasa Train Schedule

There is no Tibet train that directly originates from Xi’an, but the trains from Guangzhou and Shanghai will stop at the Xi’an Railway Station for a while before continuing heading forwards to Lhasa. So there are two trains from Xi’an to Lhasa every day. Train Z265 departs at 07:53 a.m. every day and arrives in Lhasa at 14:17 p.m. on the next day. Train Z165 departs at 09:27 a.m. and arrives at 15:05 p.m. In the return trip, the train bounding for Xi’an from Lhasa leaves at 11:50 and 20:38 a.m. respectively.

Lanzhou-Lhasa Train Schedule

Currently, there are five trains that can bring travelers from Lanzhou to Lhasa. These trains originate from other cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Chongqing, and stop at Lanzhou on the way. It takes around 23 hours to get from Lanzhou to Lhasa by train.
