Air China Airlines

Air China is the largest state-owned flag carrier and one of the major airlines in China, with its headquarters in Beijing and flight operations based at Beijing Capital International Airport. Currently, the airline has opened more than 200 domestic and international air routes, reaching a significant number of Asian, Australian, American and European destinations from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and other cities in China.

As for the flights to Tibet, Air China handles direct flights from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, Xining etc., and one international flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Sichuan Airlines

Headquartered in Chengdu, Sichuan Airlines is the most important airline in southwest China, especially in Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet. It also has branch offices in Chongqing and Kunming, and operating bases in Hangzhou, Sanya, Beijing, Xi’an and Harbin. The air route network of Sichuan Airlines has grown from the first seven to over 240 now, connecting nearly 30 international destinations like Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Kathmandu, Vancouver, Sydney, Moscow, Los Angeles, and Cairo etc.

Currently Sichuan Airlines is the most popular airline which operates a dozen direct flights to Tibet every day from Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xian, Kathmandu etc. As a better option, tourist are suggested to fly to Tibet from Chengdu, as there are more direct flights available with cheaper fares there.

Tibet Airlines

Tibet Airlines is the first high plateau airline in China, with its base located in Lhasa Gongga International Airport. Centered in the southwest China, it has now opened high altitude routes connecting Tibet with surrounding cities, like Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xining, Lanzhou etc. Meanwhile, there are also flights departing from Beijing and Shanghai to Lhasa, operated by Tibet Airlines.

The advantage of Tibet Airlines compared to other airlines is that it can take tourists directly to other cities of Tibet, like Nyingchi and Shigatse, in addition to Lhasa. If you want to start your Tibet tour in a different way, leaving out the conventional beginning point of Lhasa, you might get more opportunities by taking the flight by Tibet Airlines.

Other Airlines Offering Flights to Tibet

Except the above-mentioned, there are mainly China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines operating frequent flights to Tibet. Respectively headquartered in Shanghai and Guangzhou, the two airlines belong to “Big Three of China Aviation”, together with Air China. Currently the flights to Tibet operated by China Eastern Airlines mainly leave from Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an and Kunming.
